Africa University, an International Pan African and United Methodist Church Related Institution in Zimbabwe invites applications from suitably qualified and well experienced persons to fill the following positions:

1. DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR

The successful candidate, who will report to and deputize  the Vice Chancellor, will be expected to initiate, recommend, implement and monitor policies, systems and procedures relating to academic issues.  The University therefore seeks a dynamic individual, of high personal and academic integrity, whose experience will assist the University in implementing its strategic plan.

The successful candidate will have at least 10 years experience in a leadership position in a recognised tertiary institution. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST

  • A holder of an earned doctorate degree.
  • Proven experience in leadership and management positions in tertiary and higher education, or in national and international development or equivalent capacity at a senior level.
  • A strategic team player with the skills and attributes  for the effective fulfilment of the University’s mission and vision
  • Ability to initiate and conduct research
  • Ability to oversee academic programmes and carry out programme reviews
  • Ability to conduct negotiations with University stakeholders and cooperating partners.
  • Ability to design, manage and supervise externally funded projects
  • Good human relations and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and commitment to diversity
  • Commitment to promote the vision, mission and strategic goals and pan-African policies of Africa University.
  • Demonstration of very high ethical leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstration of moral integrity by modelling Africa University’s Christian values and ethical standards.
  • Mature personality, capable of handling sensitive issues and working with public and private institutions and organisations.
  • Ability to promote public and private partnerships.

          DURATION OF APPOINTMENT

  • Four -year contract with a possibility of renewal for a further four year term dependent on performance.

 

2. DIRECTOR –DISTANCE EDUCATION

The Director of Distance Education will be responsible for developing the University’s portfolio of distance learning education, with the aim of delivering significant, sustainable improvement in the financial and academic contribution it makes to Africa University.  The Director will have responsibility for ensuring that the University is in a strong position to meet the ambitious targets it has set for itself in increasing its distance learning activity. He or she will also be responsible for developing the university’s Distance Education Policy guided by a Senate Committee.

The Director of Distance Education will work closely with academic departments and other stakeholders in identifying new opportunities for distance learning provision. He or she will work alongside departments in developing business plans and projects and managing the subsequent introduction of new distance learning courses.

The successful candidate will champion the development of improved student administration systems and other aspects of the University’s distance learning infrastructure, including the support provided by the Educational Technologies Unit for course design and production.

In liaison with the Business Office and Academic Affairs Unit, he or she will be expected to make a significant contribution to the development of improved management information to allow the performance of distance learning to be measured effectively.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST

  • A Masters degree in Educational /Technology
  • Possession of a PhD in Educational Technology is a distinct advantage
  • Relevant training in teaching methodologies
  • At least 8 years working experience
  • Experience in the delivery of distance learning and implementing the current emerging technologies for teaching and learning
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience with the development of distance education in the African context
  • Demonstrable leadership qualities and communication skills
  • Multi-lingual skills
  • Comprehensive networking skills
  • Familiarity with the development of online curriculum
