Professor Fanuel Tagwira : VICE CHANCELLOR

Fellow - Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) D. Phil. Soil chemistry and fertility, University of Zimbabwe (in collaboration with Michigan State University) M.Sc. Soil chemistry, Reading University B.Sc. Chemistry and Biology, National University of Lesotho Fanuel Tagwira served for 10 years in the Department of Research and Specialist Services of the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture in Zimbabwe. He rose through the ranks from Experimental Officer to Principal Research Scientist and Head of Soil Fertility and Crop Nutrition. During this period Fanuel was responsible for carrying out research in soil fertility and crop nutrition, supervising a team of research scientists and technicians, running the only soil and plant analysis and fertilizer advisory service in the country then. In 1992 Fanuel Tagwira joined Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe and became the first fulltime academic staff member to join the newly established Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources. At Africa University he has received funding from various international organizations and has carried out research in Soil fertility and the environment. He was instrumental in setting up of the Local Agenda 21 program for the city of Mutare and computerization of the University and setting up of the Computer Services Department. Over the last 10 years he rose from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor. He is a fellow of the Leadership for Environment and Development and a board member of various local and international development initiatives. Professional Interest Management and improvement of soil fertility in smallholder agriculture in tropics and subtropics Utilization of organic waste as fertilizers for urban agriculture and smallholder farmers Development of grain amaranth as a crop for smallholder farmers in Africa Implementation of Agenda 21 at the local level (Local Agenda 21)
