A NEW PROGRAM: BSc in Natural Resources Management

About the Africa University BSc in Natural Resources Management

Renewable natural resources such as wildlife, fisheries and forest products are critical to economic development and maintenance of sustainable livelihoods for people throughout the world.  These resources must be carefully managed in an ecologically sustainable, culturally appropriate, and economically valuable manner to meet the needs of human societies.  Appropriate management of wildlife and forest resources to achieve these goals depends on appropriate generation of expertise and application of relevant knowledge and principles.

Wildlife and forests can contribute significantly toward the Millennium Development Goals concerning poverty, food security, and sustainability of development by:

  • Meeting energy and housing needs for the rural poor
  • Providing fodder for domestic livestock and wildlife
  • Protecting water sources
  • Rehabilitating degraded soils
  • Providing food such as wild fruits, nuts, vegetables, and roots
  • Providing ingredients for both traditional and modern medicines

Good management practices are important if wildlife and forests are to play their roles in the achievement of the benefits indicated above.  We need environmental managers who understand the social, economic, and environmental factors underlying the best practices of resource management.  This is the essence of the new BSc Environmental Management and BSc Wildlife and Fisheries Management at Africa University.  The new program seeks to address the following areas:

  • Environmental degradation and food security in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Effects of agro-chemicals on ecosystems
  • Environmental consequences of tourism, mining, and urbanization
  • Desertification and methods of control
  • Wildlife/protected area monitoring
  • Water resource protection and management
  • Human population dynamics and land use changes
  • Environmental impact assessment and sustainable development

Program Goals and Design

To advance the intellectual and human resource capacity of the nation and the international community in environmental management, wildlife, fisheries, and eco-tourism management by:

  • Providing graduates with specialized skills in environmental planning, wildlife, fisheries and eco-tourism management
  • Producing graduates who have the in-depth knowledge and capability to conduct environmental  assessment and to follow changes over time
  • Developing graduates who will make valuable contributions to society in terms of monitoring and conserving natural resources

The degree program is designed such that, at the end of the first two years, students will be required to choose specialization courses in BSc Environmental Management and in BSc Wildlife and Fisheries Management.
