Martin Luther King remembered
Activities to commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King were held on 18 January in the Jokomo/ Yamada Library. Library staff organised screening of a number of videos depicting the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement leader, such as Men of Peace and Speeches of Martin Luther King. Students turned out in large numbers for the screenings, said event coordinator, Brian Kutiwa. Each year, the University community commemorates Martin Luther King Day on the third Monday in January. The day is set aside to highlight the principles of justice and equality articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King in relation to the contemporary situations and issues.“This year, we focused on peace, in line with our desire to create a new breed of leaders who are able to resolve conflicts peacefully through mediation and other non-violent approaches,” said Kutiwa. In February, the University will mark Black History Month with special lectures, exhibitions and video screenings. The commemorative activities for Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month are supported each year by the United States Information Service (USIS) and the US Embassy in Harare.
