Software Freedon Day Celebrations In Zimbabwe at Africa University Linuxchix Zimbabwe Chapter successfully hosted Software Freedom Day Celebrations in Mutare at Africa University on 6 October 2007. Of the invited, 100 people turned up, these were high school students and their teachers, tertiary college students and their lecturers, Africa University Computer Information Systems students and Linuxchix Zimbabwe Chapter members. Distinguished guests among the invited were, from Africa University:Doctor Pamela Machakanja who is an Associate Director in the Institute of Peace Leadership and Governance, Professor Quarshie the Dean in the Faculty of Education, Mr Wisdom Machacha , the Network Engineer and Mr George Mandewo a Lecturer in the Faculty of Management and Adminstration - Winner of the university's Most innovative Lecturer in eLearning Award for using Moodle a FOSS learning management system. Among the guests was the Headmaster at Ellis Gledhill a secondary shool in Mutare. Activities on the day involved a mentorship / Leadership Presentation by Shingirayi Kwari, a member of the British Council Interaction Program. An address on Free Open Source Software by Fortunate Sibanda, a member of the LinuxChix Zimbabwe Chapter, Demonstration of FOSS using Ubuntu live CD led by one of the linuxchix members, an address on Women and ICT by Dr. Pamela Machakanja. The Zimbabwe Chapter managed to raise some funds by auctioning 2 of the t-shirts sent by Software Freedom International. Prizes were also won during the Quiz session. The events ended at 3pm marking the end to SFD in Zimbabwe, organised and intiated by Linuxchix Zimbawe Chapter.
