The raison d’etre of AU is to provide ‘total education’ for the youth of Africa so as to foster African unity and development. The concept of total education comprises a blend of mental, spiritual and physical development of the youth and future leaders of Africa who are faced with the challenge of ensuring peaceful leadership and good governance in Africa in the twenty-first century.

Africa University believes peaceful leadership and good governance is the key to creating the requisite enabling environment for socio-economic advancement of Africa, and global peace.

As part of this dream, a mass annual sporting event in the form of an International Peace Marathon has been instituted by AU in cooperation with the city of Mutare and with the support of the business community on the last Saturday in September of each year. ‘Peace’ is the theme of the marathon and the annual event is dubbed as the ‘Africa University International Peace Marathon’. This event is expected to bring together people from all walks of life and diverse cultures around the globe to foster unity, cultural harmony, love and peace.

The first of these annual Marathon events took place on November 9, 2002 as one of the major activities commemorating the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the establishment of Africa University.
