Visiting faculty helping to deliver
new and established programmes

Five persons joined the University as visiting faculty in
August. Three of the newcomers,

Mrs. Sharon Bullock and Mr. Robert Nyoni, are teaching in the Faculty
of Education. The Bullocks have come to AU from the State of Idaho in the US
and will be at AU for one semester.Mr. Robert Nyoni, a lecturer and
Chairman of the Department ofEducational Foundations at the Midlands
State University in Zimbabwe, is on sabbatical leave. He’ll be with the faculty
for eight months.

Dr. Philomene Makolo (left) has been appointed as a Senior
Lecturer in the Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance (IPLG).
She is teaching in the IPLG and in the new master’s degree programme in public sector management in the Faculty of Management andAdministration. Dr. Makolo, a former diplomat and UN official, comes to AU from Canada where she lectures part time at the University of Ottawa. “I’ve chosen to come to AU because inthe midst of all our problems here inAfrica, I think that
there’s somethingreally good happeningin this place in Mutare,” said Makolo. She's enthusiastic about sharing her skills and expertise with fellow professionals who are playing critical roles in Africa’s ongoing development. Makolo describes the new public sector management training programme at AU as “credible and critical” because
it is “coming at a time when we need to strengthen the leadership in Africa”.

Dr. David Leeper (left) has also
joined the IPLG . He’s on aone-year assignment. Leeper,an Assistant Dean and
Director of the PlowsharesPeace Studies Project at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, is being supportedby the U.S. government’s Fulbright program. This semester he’s teaching twocourses—Human Rights and the Rule of Law and Peace and Conflict—as well as focusing on strengthening thestudents’ writing skills.Dr. Leeper says he’s learning
from the students,exploring their needs and expectations and looking at how
the IPLG is doing on meeting them. He’s also reviewing the internship and dissertation processes in order to contributeto the ongoing work of refining the Institute’s programmes.
