QUICKFIND
THE MANZUNUNU PROJECT

Established in April 2003, Manzununu is a dairy project located about 40 km from Mutare. It is a cooperative of 97 members bound by a standing constitution. In total they have 74 cows and one bull.

Currently, they are selling milk to people in their community only. Their wish is to secure a contact with Dairibord but this has been hampered by lack of proper milk storage facilities and an appropriate and hygienic milking facility.

Funds are required to build a milking pallor, purchase and/ or grow stock feed and to acquire refrigerators to store milk. The biggest challenge is that of electricity, which is required by the whole community, and is also pivotal to the taking off of the dairy project. It is difficult for the small community to raise the amount of money required for rural electrification ($300 000 000) as it is well above their means. This has therefore brought about the need to seek external funding. The group does a bit of fundraising in the form of catering in the community during local functions but this does not raise significant funds

Currently, the AREX Department of Livestock assists in terms of technical advise on how to care for the cattle. However, we are seeking more partners to expand and accelerate the project.
